The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which conducts horse races at the Mumbai and Pune racecourse, celebrated Wadia Day with great enthusiasm at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday.
The day saw running of the 76th CN Wadia Gold Cup, one of the premier races held during the Mumbai racing season every year. Trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha’s 7-year-old horse Vulcan, available at 3/1, scored a surprise victory to claim the coveted Cup. Ace jockey A Sandesh stole the limelight among professionals with a grand treble.
On the occasion, Ness Wadia, managing director of the Wadia Group, which runs the Bai Jerbai Wadia Women’s Hospital in the Parel area, felicitated 10 pediatric cardiac patients who have overcome the heart ailments. The children, who have survived cardiac ailments such as open-heart surgery/stroke and other interventions, also performed at the event.
The picturesque Mahalaxmi racecourse exists today thanks to visionary late Sir Cusrow N Wadia, who had the vision, money and desire to transform a marshland into a showpiece. He advanced an interest-free loan to the club to build the racecourse and grandstands, which were modelled after Melbourne racecourse in 1915.
